Extension to the YARAT Art Centre

Extension to the YARAT Art Centre

Yarat is a contemporary art space dedicated to nurturing an understanding of contemporary art and creating a hub for artistic practice, research and thinking in the Caucasus, Central Asia and the surrounding region. Art Space is located on Baku Boulevard, which runs parallel to Baku’s seafront.

We have designed an extension to the building to include an entrance hub with a lobby, reception and lounge area. Conceptually, the new building extension is designed as a monumental object, which at the same time is both part of the total volume of the building whilst also acting as an individual installation. In this way, the entrance hub is transformed from a static installation into a functioning space.

The facade of the building consists of double-glass partitions without frames, which are structurally self-supporting. Between the two parallel glass planes, there is a free space that functions as an exhibition platform. The transparent entrance hub breaks down the boundary between interior and exterior spaces, allowing both volumes to merge into a single whole. This effect is also enhanced by the flowing, polished chrome-plated ceiling. The surface of the material is a mirror image of a dynamic reflection of the indoor and outdoor spaces.

The new extension is deliberately built to contrast with the existing architecture. In this way, reinforcing the essence of the YARAT Art Space, which aims to promote the importance and presence of contemporary art in the development of world processes. Architecture, representing modern art, itself comes to form part of it.

A similar extension is planned for an adjacent building.

YARAT (meaning “create” in Azerbaijani) was founded by Aida Mahmudova in 2011. YARAT realizes its mission through an on-going program of exhibitions, education events and festivals. YARAT facilitates exchange between local and international artistic networks including foundations, galleries and museums.
