Bar with a roof teracce in Rotterdam

The bar is supposed to be located in Timmerhuis, a new mixed-use building in Rotterdam’s city center. Author of architecture is well-known OMA, architecture office led by architect Rem Koolhaas. The structure of the building consists of three blocks – municipal services, offices and residential units.
The place serves as a café daily while in the evening it transforms into a bar. It is located on the first floor of the building. The interior continues the architectural design scheme – geometric metal structures. One of the essential interior settings is to create an environment that functions equally effectively in four different conditions – a day and night modes, a summer and winter time.

Cubes are the main constructive element, which forms a modular, freestanding, multifunctional system. It integrates the design, installation, and furniture of the bar at the same time. In order to emphasize the expressive proportion of the space – a 40-meter high ceiling, the installation of cubes is created in a vertical dimension. The modular nature of polyhedron makes it possible to vary the constructive structure, which can be transformed depending on the daytime or season. In this way, the mobile cube partition can be separate or open areas that are necessary for the current situation. Cubes are chosen by materiality with a purpose to make of different materials with the aim of varying with a light transmission coefficient. The central volume of cubes is designed as an installation of different layers. Each level consists different materiality. The lower level cubes are made of light-tight material and the materiality of each next level becomes more and more transparent. Of the recommended three level combinations materials are – a wood, a mirror, and a glass. The cube installation is complemented by lighting, which creates an effect similar to a disco-ball. It is possible to control the mood of the space in different time of day.
